I had the pleasure of hosting and curating our first installment of Dark Tranquility at Coalesce Studios. Photographer C. Fisher and I took over the gallery with our themed duo installment. Dark Tranquility invites the artists to explore their own unique perspective on darkness and the serene detachment from the light side.

Artist Statement:

The bulk of this series is an ode to my inner ‘dark’ child. Built upon the foundations of morbid curiosity as an adolescent and the retroactive imbibing of adult dissidents the imagery produced is part of the complex exploration of the deep temporal incubus that perpetually develops in the backdrop of mind and space. Transcending the playful forms nurtured by unfiltered imagination the collection as a whole combines inanimate objects that once ‘lived’ in the juvenile mental framework with the fermented decay of a being who seeks to find cause in self-progeny and wavering juvenescence.

Meditating on time and the philosophy that we grow old only to flesh out the memories of our surviving antiquity the black mass of yesteryear concerns continue to inhabit the recesses blocked by aging experiences. Re-establishing the connections of brooding reconnaissance from the past with the throttling catechisms of elder perception and intellect is a constant battle of building chapters left behind to signify one’s own preservation in a culture of conformity. Mingling the artifacts of youth with idiosyncratic ghosts that haunt a ‘mature’ intuition is a means of fine tuning recollection with the declining nostalgia that is the essence of today’s mature material being.

From Star Wars and He-Man action figures to hand puppets and sock monkeys therein lies the enigmatic displacement of a wandering soul that fills the anatomy of pulpy husks consistently met with indelible mutated retrospection.
