It is no secret I like to make good use of all types of wood for various displays and environmental art pieces. You can typically find me with a hot stylus in one hand burning some evil into a flat stock of raw wood. I’ve found a new love that is like the brother of my hand stylus burning only bigger. Utilizing a router and custom bits I now do ultra large burnings/routings that inevitably render larger custom pieces. For the Live Fast Burn Slow collection I created three death heads which is the iconic skull that acts as the show collection logo and subliminal diabolic mascot.

King Villain Death Head utilizes aerosol, latex, stenciling, and custom vintage treatments. The skull element is literally burned out of the surface of the wood which creates a bevelled interior reverse relief. The King Villain crown is applied in gold and the diamond pattern acts as a nice border with reflective qualities.

Death Record Death Vinyl Head uses the same process with different paints and stain applications. I really wanted more of a raw effect with the intentions of letting the grain be present and sanding down strategic areas of the surface. The record is real vinyl and a vintage find that was transformed into the proverbial gold record. Platinum just seemed a little to sheik for this show and the death head pieces needed to reflect the gold, red, black, and white general palette of the entire collection.
