For the Live Fast Burn Slow collection I decided to reach deep in my black bag of tricks and pull out some new methodology in not only the artwork creation but the finishing applications as well. All of the master pieces in the collection were constructed by hand from every aspect. This includes building the boxes, drawing, inking, coloring, montaging, cutting stencils, hand embellishments, as well as working with wax as a finish. We aren’t talking about simple candle wax, we are talking about harvesting beeswax directly from the hive, purifying it, and using it as a sealing protectant for each and every art piece. The wax not only acts as the perfect finish to protect but also creates various textures and imperfections embedded into the surface of each piece. The trick is in the temperature and pour of the wax and how it is allowed to cool. Below is a photographic montage of pieces of my process to be noted that this collection is respectively unique in every aspect of creation from working with nature to inking in the studio. I’d like to give a special shout out to my summer intern/apprentice Alec Goss. We put this collection together with all the odds against us!
