It is no secret I love my ink and indulge in designing tattoos for the world’s most rad musicians, visual artists, and fans of dark art. The Raven was designed for a good friend, fellow artista, and Seattle neighbor. She knew where to come to for perfected linework that translates well to the body. After consulting on form, destination, and sizing Beery Method Studios went hard to work. Perfect timing was about as the design was produced right around the Halloween holiday season. I’m dually a deep fan of Edgar Allen Poe and the majestic black birds that congregate the open yards of the Pacific NW which made this design work exceptionally inspiring.

Aside from the subject matter of the Raven we needed to represent the gypsy side of the client’s lifestyle. We decided to move forward with another great element that represents travelling, adventure, and the vagabond. Injecting the compass with hands pointing to NW for the Pacific NW was the perfect balance. The design was created to move from the top of the shoulder and down the upper arm almost like a half sleeve. Reference for the Raven was shot upon a visit to the Grand Canyon where murders of crows migrate. A nice zoom lens on my Canon Rebel XTI caught a wonderful shot to use for detailed analysis. Needless to say I sent the client to one of Seattle’s top tattoo maestros Chani Murat of Good Karma Tattoo to finish out the body work with blazing ink and needle.
