I had the honor of collaborating with the master of scroll saw painting for a couple of additions to my Live Fast Burn Slow collection. Rick Wallace is no stranger to cutting beautiful curves and swimming briskly in the still waters of stains, inks, and dyes. Wallace and I had admired one another’s skills and astute attention to detail and decided it was inevitable that we work together on something ambitious. Gearing up for the San Francisco show I decided that it was time we make it happen and offered up two of my Hobo Eaters characters to be immortally displayed through the intricate means and media of Wallace’s scroll saw work.

Scroll saw painting combines two of my favorite media: Wood and Paint. It’s not even as simple as that. Every detailed element that is incorporated into the scroll saw pieces are individual shapes that have been custom cut by the steady hands of the creative saw maestro Wallace. He painstakingly paints, stains, dyes, each and every hand cut element. The pieces, which are based off of a master pattern, are then reassembled much like a puzzle and the entire piece is then finished off with varnish and several delicate applications that smooth out the surface like glass. When it is all said and done it is somewhat confusing how the feat was accomplished. Needless to say even the smallest of Wallace’s pieces are extremely time intensive. It is a craft unlike no other and I’m proud and honored to work with such a creative beast that is Wallace.

We will be revealing more of Rick Wallace’s process and creation of the Lumbering Jack scroll saw painting as well as another collab. For commissions please contact us!
